Welsh star Lloyd rains on Tanner’s parade

WELSH international Callum Lloyd stamped his authority on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour on his debut outing.

Lloyd smacked in a century and disposed of rankings champion Ben Tanner 2-0 in the final of the eighth and last leg at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon.

The Newport-based potting machine, who made two semi-final appearances on the Championship Tour earlier this year, won all four round-robin group matches but was made to fight for his victories.

Ollie Kendrick (Whitmore Reans Cons, Wolverhampton) and Oliver Parsons (Jesters, Swindon) both took two frames off him.

A 2-1 semi-final win against Dean Matthews (Ivy Leaf Club, Maidenhead) set Lloyd up for his first Cuestars final.

Meanwhile, as expected, Tanner (The Academy, Eastleigh) clinched top spot in the rankings and booked a date with world number eight Stephen Lee at the Cuestars finals day in Swindon on Sunday, June 3.

Despite losing to leg-six winner Ben Fortey (SWSA, Gloucester), the 19-year-old finished top of his group and defeated Kendrick 2-0 in the last-four.

Tanner has appeared in all eight legs this season, winning two of his five finals and only failing to progress from the group stages once.

He finished 37 points ahead of second-placed Danny Tallentire (Player’s, Westbury).

Top-16 qualifiers for Finals Day: Ben Tanner (The Academy, Eastleigh), Danny Tallentire (Player’s, Westbury), Stuart Scott (Romford SC), Ben Fortey (SWSA, Gloucester), Dean Matthews (Ivy Leaf Club, Maidenhead), Daniel Woods (Chandler’s Ford SC), Lee Bell (The Academy, Eastleigh), Kevin Impett (Chandler’s Ford SC), Bradley Chappell (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth), Ollie Kendrick (Whitmore Reans Cons, Wolverhampton), Callum Lloyd (Rileys, Newport, South Wales), Jonjo Sharkey (Crucible, Newbury), Jordan Winbourne (Chandlers Ford SC), Oliver Parsons (Jesters, Swindon), Aaron Watts (Crucible, Newbury), Liam Burnet (The Academy, Eastleigh).

O’Sullivan rockets to first tournament win

HIGH Wycombe potter Sonnie O’Sullivan has recorded his first tournament win on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

The teenager, based at the town’s Liberal Club, disposed of Woking’s Daniel Know 2-0 in the final of the eight and last leg at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon.

Two wins out of three saw O’Sullivan progress from his round-robin group in second place.

And after accounting for Jack Dady (The Academy, Basingstoke) 2-0 in the last-eight, the 15-year-old beat the highly-rated Thomas Lancastle (Eastville SC, Bristol) 2-0 in the semi-finals.

O’Sullivan ended the season in eighth place.

Meanwhile, the home club’s Troy Bodman was crowned rankings champion. Bodman, who lost 2-0 in the quarter-finals to Knox, will play PTC champion Stephen Lee at the Cuestars Finals Day on Sunday, June 3, at Jesters.

The consistent Bodman finished the season 22 points ahead of clubmate Joshua Lee, winning four of the eight tournaments and never once failing to qualify from the group stages.

He ain’t heavy, he’s my clubmate

A TEN-year-old Bournemouth potter did himself and a Greenbaize SC clubmate a massive favour at the final leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.

Bradley Cowdroy, who finished bottom of his five-man round-robin group in last month’s seventh leg in Newbury, bounced back from his disappointment and swept to victory at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon.

A 2-0 victory over Matthew Bellinger (Jesters, Swindon) meant Cowdroy clinched third place.

Watching nervously was rankings leader Stewart Ball.

Ball had been beaten 2-1 by Cowdroy in the last-four. And Bellinger closed the gap to three points by seeing off Bradley Lane (Copnor SC, Portsmouth) 2-0 in the second semi.

But Cowdroy ended Bellinger’s hopes and it is Ball who will take on top professional Stephen Lee at the Cuestars Finals Day on Sunday, June 3, at Jesters.

Remarkably, the top four, who between them won all eight tournaments this season, were separated by just six points.

Cowdroy finished one point ahead of Nathan Farmer (Stoke SC, Gosport), who lost 2-1 to Ball in the last-eight.

Top-16 qualifiers for Finals Day: Stewart Ball (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth), Matthew Bellinger (Jesters, Swindon), Bradley Cowdroy (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth), Nathan Farmer (Stoke SC, Gosport), Jasmine Bolsover (Woking SC), Mike Trigg (Chandler’s Ford SC), Karl Eggar (Stoke SC, Gosport), Austen Petty (Chandler’s Ford SC), Olly Clark (Chandler’s Ford SC), Spike Hull (Chandler’s Ford SC), Jamie Wilson (Copnor SC, Portsmouth), Kaine Petty (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth), Corey Tallentire (Player’s, Westbury), Thomas Holton (Woking SC), Bradley Lane (Copnor SC, Portsmouth), Arnie Petty (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth).

Tallentire, based at Player’s, Westbury, has played in 20 tournaments and has reached the quarter-finals three times in the last 15 months.
