McEvoy’s re-spotted black prowess pays dividends in Bournemouth

TOM McEvoy’s solo practice on re-spotted blacks helped him collect his second winner’s trophy on the Cuestars Under-21 Silver Tour in Bournemouth.

Although he defeated Channel Islander Archie Greier 2-0 in the final of the tenth and last leg at Greenbaize Snooker Club, his last-four match will be the one that lives longest in his memory.

Paying tribute to his 11-year-old opponent, McEvoy said: “Archie played some really good stuff. He’s going to be really good player.”

But the 15-year-old from Warminster was particularly delighted with his 2-1 semi-final victory over rankings champion Mason Wilson (Basingstoke)

The two frames he won were both on re-spotted blacks.

McEvoy said: “I’ve done some practice where I set up a re-spotted black and play against myself.”

The teenager thanked his dad and mum, Richard and Liz, and coach John Hunter.

The frame-of-the-day award must go to Gus Walker. The 13-year-old from Brighton beat his highest competitive break twice – and in the same frame. He made a 41 followed by a 53 in his first frame of the day against Wilson.

Greier ended the season as runner-up. Jack Squires (Gosport) is third and McEvoy is fourth.

The event was sponsored by Greenbaize SC (www.greenbaizesnooker.com) and club member Shaun Hayman.

Next up is the Cuestars Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Championships at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, May 25.
