No summertime blues for Caden Read

CADEN Read ended a productive summer by winning the first leg of the Cuestars Under-21 Silver Tour in Newbury.

The day before he started college, Read beat his Chandlers Ford clubmate Christopher Woodward 2-1 from 1-0 down in the final at The Crucible Sports & Social Club.

“I went 1-0 down and didn’t think I was going to come back,” said the 16-year-old. “I wasn’t playing my best in the second frame but I managed to scrap it out. In the final frame, I picked it up.”

Turning to his 2-0 last-four victory over Ben Scammell, he added: “Ben gave me a good game. He was potting well but couldn’t make the breaks that he wanted.”

Over the summer, Read played for the England Under-21 C team in the Home Internationals in Leeds, increased his highest competitive break to 75 and competed in four different competitions every week at his home club.

“My matchplay is better because I’m playing better players,” he explained.

Eight of the 19-strong field were making their Silver debuts after earning promotion from Bronze. Of those, home player Jack Miller progressed the furthest, reaching the semi-finals where he lost 2-1 to Woodward and Londoner Dany Lee make the last-eight.

Milo Taylor recorded the day’s highest break of 44.
