12-year-old wins Cons club championship

A CONSERVATIVE club’s annual snooker championship has been won by a 12-year-old.

And he beat his poor old dad in the semi-finals.

Awesome potted Aidan Murphy collected £100 prize money after accounting for Nick Hawkins, one of Bristol’s top amateur players, 2-0 in the final of the Brislington & St Annes Conservative Club tournament.

Murphy – who defeated his dad, Derek, by the same score in the last-four – doubled a re-spotted black into a middle pocket in the second frame to claim his place on the club’s prestigious plaque.

The budding star receives free practice at the club and has won 13 of his 16 frames for their B team in the Bristol and District Billiards and Snooker League’s Premier division this season.

Murphy has also set a record on the Gold Waistcoat Tour run by the West of England Billiards & Snooker Foundation by becoming their youngest entrant in its 11-year history.

And he demonstrated that he wasn’t just there to make up the numbers by qualifying from his round-robin group in the fourth event hosted and sponsored by the 147 Snooker Club in Swindon.

Ex-professional Eddie Manning ended Murphy’s run with a 2-0 victory in the last-16 but said that the youngster’s safety play and shot selection was the best he has ever seen from a 12-year-old.

Murphy is sponsored by Bristol-based Elite Mobility and also competes on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.
