Mears regains Byfleet handicap singles title

ALDERSHOT hotshot Ryan Mears (pictured) said he “hadn’t felt like that” following a snooker final for ages.

Despite conceding starts in every round, the 28-year-old Cuestars Championship Tour player has regained the Byfleet & District Billiards & Snooker League’s handicapped singles title.

The 2012 champion chalked up breaks of 90 and 73 in the two-frame aggregate points final against Tom Howick, from Staines Conservative Club, at Chertsey Social Club

Mears, who turns out for Knaphill Working Men’s Club, said: “I was really pleased with how I played every round through the whole tournament.

“It felt like I was giving big starts in every match to very good players – no more so than in the final. So to win it the way I did was an awesome feeling.

“I was enjoying it so much I never wanted it to end. I haven’t felt like that after a final for a long time.”

A league spokesman said: “Winning the final by 118 points may indicate that the handicapper should be embarrassed.

“(But) on this occasion, it was simply that the best man won and had put up an outstanding performance.”
