Stewart and Hunter set for South Wilts showdown

DEFENDING champion Jake Stewart and 12-time winner John Hunter are set for a title showdown in the Cuestars South Wilts Snooker League this week.

The pair, who have an identical record and share top spot in the table, meet in the sixth round of matches.

Hunter maintained his challenge with breaks of 62 and 51 in a 5-0 victory over third-placed Antony Foxcroft at Salisbury Snooker Club.

And Stewart kept up the pressure with a brace of 68s in a 5-0 whitewash of Mark Ridout.

Ridout said: “Jake played great. He missed very little. I can see why he won (the title) last year.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Mason was full of praise for Lee Stagg after another 5-0 defeat.

The 15-year-old said: “Lee is a fantastic player and he thoroughly deserved the victory.”

Stuart Dreyer climbed to fourth after beating Paul Burt 4-1 in a tight encounter.

“Most of the games were fairly close with some good safety play,” he said. “I was pleased to pinch the frames on the final colours.”

Burt added: “It was a close game that didn’t go my way.”

Kev Impett has pulled out of the league and all of his results have been deleted.

Results: John Hunter 5-0 Antony Foxcroft, Eddie Mason 0-5 Lee Stagg, Paul Burt 1-4 Stuart Dreyer, Jake Stewart 5-0 Mark Ridout.

Highest break: John Hunter 88
