Daniel Walter claims first tournament win

DANIEL Walter was quite rightly “chuffed to bits” after claiming his first success on the Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Tour at his 24th attempt.

The 17-year-old from Portsmouth clinched the Championship title at the end-of-season finale at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon.

Walter beat Caden Read (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1 on the black from 1-0 down in the final.

“I’m chuffed to bits,” he said, before receiving his trophy from guest professional Joe Perry.

“It feels good to finally win one. I’ve come close a few times.

“I missed a few balls that I shouldn’t have because of pressure.”

Walter was unbeaten in his five-man round-robin group before overcoming newcomer Donnie Gola (Islington) 2-1 in the last-eight and then Lennon Savage (Southampton) 2-0 to reach the final.

Read had knocked out rankings winner Zain Jeraj (Tooting) 2-1 in the second semi.

Walter – a product of the junior section at Mayfair Snooker Club, Gosport – finished joint runner-up in the Bronze rankings in his fourth season on the junior circuit. He qualified for the knockout in seven of the eight legs.
