Team Plummer claim first win

COULSDON teenager Evan Plummer reckons psychology lessons from his mum helped to make it third time lucky on a regional snooker circuit.

The 13-year-old had lost his previous two finals on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour but stepped over the winning line at Top Spot Snooker Club, Havant.

Plummer dropped only one frame, to Keegan Reed (Salisbury), out of nine in the round-robin group stages and beat Drew Hampshire (Swindon) 2-1 in the last-four from 1-0 down.

And the left-hander picked up his first winner’s trophy following a 2-0 victory over new rankings leader Charlie Pringle in the sixth leg sponsored by Trevor Sanders Snooker & Pool Table Services.

However, Plummer insisted it was a team effort and paid tribute to coach Terry Burke, club owner Tony Thompson for weekly practice matches at Frames Sports Bar and mum, Helen.

“It was really good,” he said. “I was quite consistent all day. The semi-final against Drew Hampshire was quite close.

“(In the final) I tried to stay composed and just let him make the mistakes but he played well

“My mum’s been doing a bit of psychology with me. It’s something I’ve been working on for a few weeks.”

Plummer, whose highest competitive break is 68, is in his second season on the Silver Tour and lost in the finals in Salisbury, last October, and at his home club, in December. He also competes on the EASB Regional Junior Tour – South East.

Pringle won ten straight frames and recorded five breaks of more than 30 to top his group before overcoming first-time semi-finalist Kaine Petty (Fordingbridge) 2-1.

And the 15-year-old had the consolation prize of taking over the rankings lead by two points from Chandler’s Ford clubmate Ryan Hughes, who missed out on qualifying for the knockout by one frame. Plummer is third, 32 points off the lead.
