Laxton regains Waterlooville junior title

The 13-year-old from Portsmouth ended a remarkably successive season 14 points clear of Dean Russell at the top of Division 1.

Laxton acknowledged how much the overall standard has risen over the past 20 weeks.

Everyone’s coming on and the numbers are starting to grow, which is good,” he said.

“Everyone’s pushing each other.

“It was a lot more challenging than the first one.”

In his debut season on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour, the teenager, who has increased his highest break to 41, finished third in the rankings and won the Championship play-off in Swindon.

Meanwhile, Billy Reid won the Division 2 title for the second time and Tyler Mack took the honours in Division 3 in his first season.

Russell was undefeated in the top group on his 17th birthday. Cake was devoured and the lads and lass sang happy birthday to him.

Henry Martin equalled his highest break of 22 against Owen Jenkins.

Russell, Jenkins and Reid were the only ever-present players in Season 4.

Keira Hiscock had her first outing which took the number of players to have competed in this season to a record 25.

A new 20-week season starts next Wednesday.

World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley runs snooker sessions for under-19s from 4.30-6.30pm every Monday and Wednesday and junior pool sessions from 4.30-6.30pm every Thursday at Waterlooville Sports Bar.

Dean Russell claims first Waterlooville title
Dean Russell – Season 3 Division 1 Winner

DEAN Russell made it third time lucky in his bid to claim the Wednesday Junior Snooker League title at Waterlooville Sports Bar.

The 16-year-old from Copnor, twice a runner-up, ended the third season six points clear of defending champion Samuel Laxton.

Russell said: “It’s a great achievement considering I’ve come runner-up twice in a row.

“And it’s a higher standard. Everyone’s beating everyone now.

“I’m glad I got a lot of points at the start of the season.”

Reflecting on the new 20-week season that starts next Wednesday, he said: “If I could defend the title, it’ll be fantastic because it’s never been done before.”

And he added that he was “very happy” to be fourth in the rankings in his debut year on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.

Russell, who is in the first year of a plastering course at Highbury College, had never played competitive snooker before joining the league a little over a year ago.

League organiser and World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley said: “I’m delighted for Dean.

“He’s had a fantastic year. He’s suffered some disappointments. And now he’s proved he’s a winner.”

Meanwhile, Laxton booked automatic promotion to the Cuestars Silver Tour after passing the 40-break milestone.

The 12-year-old compiled a 41, using only pinks and blues, in his first match against the newly-crowned champion.

Vinnie Rix, who joined the league part way through the season, won the second round-robin group and secured the Division 2 title by one point from Antony Terroni.

Henry Martin won Division 3 from George Laxton.

In the Monday Junior League, Owen Jenkins rose to the challenge of making a 20 break using reds and colours before his debut on the Cuestars Bronze Tour at Top Spot SC, Havant, on Sunday.

The nine-year-old proved he is ready by making a personal best 25 against Jake Martin and then adding a 23 against Lewis Wilson.

Laxton claims Waterlooville title

A 12-YEAR-OLD sports all-rounder from Portsmouth has made a winning return to snooker after a two-year break – thanks to The News.

Samuel Laxton only lost three of his 60 frames over the 20 weeks to clinch the Division 1 title in the Waterlooville Sports Bar Junior Snooker League

“It’s been really challenging but I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.

Samuel Laxton – Season 2 Division 1 Winner

Laxton – who also excels at football, badminton, golf and table tennis – returned to the green baize last year and joined the league after reading a newspaper report.

“I saw the advert in the paper about this so I decided to come along,” he explained.

“I think I’m going to concentrate on my snooker now.”

League organiser and World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley said: “Samuel has dominated this second season. It has been a remarkable run.

“Full credit to him. But now it’s up to the others to step up to the mark.”

Laxton, whose highest break is 35, reached the semi-finals on his debut on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour on home tables last Sunday.

Dean Russell was runner-up for the second season running.

Owen Jenkins secured second place in Division 2 behind Billy Reid.

First Waterlooville Sports Bar title for Lewis Wilson

A BUDDING green baize star from Havant said it was “amazing” to claim his first winner’s trophy.

Lewis Wilson secured the Division 1 title in the inaugural Waterlooville Sports Bar Junior Snooker League with an unbeaten run in the final week’s matches.

The 11-year-old, whose high break is 22, was the only ever-present player.

Elsewhere, Zak Truscott was crowned the Division 2 champion. The 13-year-old said doing so well in his first snooker competition was “brilliant”.

Dean Russell pipped Harry Wilson for the runner-up spot in the top flight on frames won while Jack Bover did the same to Billy Reid in the second tier.

League organiser Tim Dunkley, a World Snooker coach, said: “We have been bowled over by the success of this new league.

“Most of the lads had never played in a competition before and they have all improved, not only in the standard of their play but in their knowledge of the rules and the table etiquette.

“The aim now is to get some of them ready to compete on the Cuestars regional junior circuit next season.

“It’s been a pleasure working with them and seeing them develop. But this is just the beginning.”

Dunkley runs sessions for under-19s from 4.30-6.30pm every Wednesday. A new 20-week league kicks off next Wednesday. Complete beginners are welcome from the age of seven upwards.
