Scott’s first women’s world championship ends in defeat

CUESTARS Gold Tour member Andrew Scott and playing partner Maria Catalano were beaten by the best in the women’s world championships at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds.

Scott and world number one Catalano, the 32-year-old cousin of Ronnie O’Sullivan, were knocked out 3-1 in the preliminary round of the Mixed Pairs by Main Tour professional Ben Woollaston and Yana Shut, from Belarus.

The 20-year-old from Acton reckons letting slip a 50-point lead with 43 on in the second frame was the turning point.

“Ben, being the class player he is, got the two snookers and they won it on the black to go 2-0 up.” he said. “Me and Maria were always going to struggle from there.”

World number 27 Woollaston and Shut defeated Wendy Jans and Jamie Clarke 3-0 in the final.

Jans, the current IBSF world and European champion from Belgium, recorded a break of 102 in the semi-finals.
