Winbourne reaches last-eight in China

IT WAS a case of hard Lines for Hedge End teenager Jordan Winbourne in the final stages of the IBSF World Under-21 Championship in China.

Winbourne’s fine run in Beijing fizzled out in the quarter-finals.

Needing three more victories for a Main Tour spot, the 17-year-old (pictured left) took a 1-0 lead against Oliver Lines.

But the son of Leeds professional Peter Lines stormed back with breaks of 56, 70, 81, 72 and 75, restricting his opponent to just 45 points in the next six frames.

Winbourne had safely progressed from the group stages before beating Andreas Ploner (Austria) 4-3 from 2-0 and 3-2 down in the first knockout round.

He then fought back from 2-1 down to account for Adam Stefanów (Poland) 5-2.

And in the last-16, he twice led Kamil Zubrzycki by two frames and twice the Pole squared the match before Winbourne edged the ninth-frame decider.

Winbourne’s group-stage results: 4-3 Chun Hin Fung (Hong Kong), 4-0 Kheng Hui Daric Sim (Singapore), 1-4 Daniel O’Regan (Ireland), 4-1 David Corens (Belgium), 3-4 Zhang Yong (China). Breaks: 81, 75, 58, 55, 54, 50.
