Townsend triumphs on record-breaking day
WAYNE Townsend was last man standing on a record-breaking day for the Cuestars Seniors Tour.
The 42-year-old from Northolt, west London, didn’t drop a single frame in nine matches in the second leg at Woking Snooker Centre.
Because the final started after 10pm, Townsend and James Height (Shepton Mallet) agreed to split the bumper £300 prize pot and play one frame for the ranking points.
The Parris Cues-sponsored event attracted a massive field of 47, the highest turnout in the 12-year history of the over-40s competition.
A total of 130 matches were played, £470 in prize money was paid out and 36 breaks of 40 or more were recorded. Nick Birney (Thame) took the honours with a run of 76.
That was what you call a full-day’s snooker – and all for just £15!
Jason Pusser (Bournemouth) and Dean Sycamore (Chichester) jointly lead the rankings. Pusser, who lost in the final of the first leg, finished third in his round-robin group while Sycamore, who made the semi-finals in Fareham, was beaten 2-0 by Wayne Muddiman (Southampton) in the last-eight.
Muddiman and Colin Norton (Gosport) pocketed £45 each for reaching the last-four.
Organisers thanked mine host Pete Ruddick, who has done so much to put Woking Snooker Centre back on the map.
Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, hosts the third leg of nine on Sunday, November 27.
