Noah wins all-island final

NOAH Gartell moved to within six points of the top of the Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Tour rankings after a successful excursion to south London.

The 12-year-old from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, collected his second winner’s trophy of the season in the sixth leg at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.

Gartell edged Channel Islander and good friend Archie Greier 2-1 in the final. It was the only frame he dropped all day.

“I should have won 2-0,” he said. “But Archie always comes back on the colours.

“I lost to him yesterday (in the Open Series at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club). It was 2-1. I should have won the second frame. I was about 20 points in front on the colours.”

And he added: “I was lucky to still be in the tournament after the last-16 when I had a black-ball game with Lee (Clayden).”

It was Gartell’s first success since gaining accreditation to the Isle of Wight Council’s Talented Athlete Scheme. He is sponsored for Cuestars events by Newport-based Wight Gold Coins.

Rankings leader Jack Squires (Gosport) lost 2-0 to Archie Light (Lymington) in the last-eight.

Reflecting on the title race, Gartell said: “I’ve got a chance. We’ll just have to see what happens.”

Rory Champion (Guildford) reached the quarter-finals for the first time. Clayden (Chingford) recorded the highest break of 28. Ten-year-old Greier moves up to third in the rankings. Joint fourth-placed Oliver Donnelly (Wandsworth) made the semi-finals for the second tournament in a row.

There was a massive 32-strong field for the event sponsored by Frames Sports Bar.

Woking Snooker Centre hosts the seventh leg of ten on Sunday, February 18.
