Sykes claims second Gold title

OLIVER Sykes has secured his second Cuestars Under-21 Gold Tour rankings title.

The 17-year-old from Chandler’s Ford beat Elliott Johnson (Sutton) 2-0 in the final of the ninth leg at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth.

It means Sykes takes an unassailable lead over Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) into the final event on home tables at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club at the end of the month.

The talented left-hander, who finished top of the table in the 2018/19 season at the age of 13, said: “It’s been a long day. A group of seven wasn’t easy – playing Jamie (Wilson), Bradley. John Donovan was a tough match.

“I’m just happy with my scoring at the moment. It’s all going in the right direction.”

Three centuries were among the 26 breaks of 40 or more recorded during the event sponsored by the host club.

Former professional Wilson (Havant), who lost 3-0 to Johnson in the last-four, contributed a brace of 101s but Cowdroy took the honours with a 105 against O’Shay Scott (Eastleigh) in his first match of the day.

The following day, Sykes – who fits in two part-time jobs around his long hours on the practice table – enjoyed a session with world number 86 Gerard Greene.
